If you’ve been a fan of The Simpsons since you first heard Bart utter the words “Eat My Shorts” in 1989, there has always been one burning question that has not been answered, until now.  Where in the heck is Springfield exactly?

I haven’t done the actual research but I am pretty sure there is a Springfield in every state.  Plus, I would venture to guess that every state has laid claim to being the home of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson.

Are you ready for this?  Creator Matt Groening revealed the location to Smithsonian Magazine, that the town is named for Springfield, Oregon!

After the article was published, the news blew up, even becoming a trending topic on Twitter!  Some of the tweets in response to the news included “Eat my shorts, Illinois!” and “Better luck next time Ohio, Mass., Illinois, Missouri, etc.”

When asked why he never spoke of the real town before, he explained, “I don’t want to ruin it for people, you know? Whenever people say it’s Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go, ‘Yup, that’s right.'” But now we know, it’s not.
