An earthquake that registered a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Virginia this afternoon. Reuters has reported that the earthquake centered near Mineral, Virginia (about 100 miles south of Washington, D.C.) was felt as far north as Manhattan and as far south as North Carolina.
So far there have been no reports of injuries or widespread damage. The quake struck around 1:15pm and lasted about 30 to 45 seconds.
Several public buildings including the Capitol building in Washington were evacuated and JFK airport was shut down because of the quake.
